NANA Regional Corporation
Rooted in Inupiat values
Red Dog Operations is a joint venture between NANA Regional Corporation, Inc. (NANA), an entity wholly owned by the Inupiat people of Northwest Alaska, and Teck Alaska Incorporated. The mining operation is based upon a unique development and lease agreement whereby Teck is the mine operator and NANA is the land owner.
Founded on the principles of consensus, cooperation and mutual respect, Red Dog Mine demonstrates that mining can be compatible with Inupiat values.
Both Teck Alaska and the NANA Regional Corporation are committed to protecting the region’s natural resources for generations to come, while fulfilling the mandate of our agreement to:
- Create lasting jobs for NANA shareholders;
- Provide opportunities for NANA’s youth; and
- Act as a catalyst for regional economic benefits without infringing upon the Inupiat culture and way of life.
Over the years, Red Dog has injected more than half a billion dollars in the NANA Region, whose boundaries are identical to those of the Northwest Arctic Borough. This economic foundation supports jobs, education and advancement opportunities and a revenue stream for local government that is allowing the area to become more self-reliant.
The mine continues to successfully develop and integrate a local workforce — NANA shareholders make up nearly 57 percent of the mine’s workforce.
